Anime Genres

Like any good movie or TV show, Anime has a lot of Genres. For those who are new to anime and don’t know what to watch, here’s a chart I found to help you start off with some good anime. For veterans looking for more to watch and explore I would visit this site: http://imgur.com/gallery/U0GZy

When watching anime one must consider what they like and what they dislike when looking through the genres to find the perfect anime to watch. As we all know there are the basic genres like Fantasy, Adveture, Drama, Comedy, Sci-Fi, ect. There are also the mixed genre that love to turn the tables on you. For instance, Madoka Magica is a fantasy anime full of magical girls. It is also full of hard core drama/thriller because the creators took the Magical Girl(mahou shoujo) theme and turned it oh so very dark. Then there’s Full Metal Alchemist(FMA), another fantasy anime but this time the setting is the early 1900s and it’s more action packed with a unique theme of the all mighty steampunk. FMA also has it’s own drama with how the main character does not wish to loose his only brother who’s soul is sealed into a suit of armor as they quest to return their bodies to normal.

Mixed genre anime are a small guilty pleasure of mine to watch. Especially when the creator takes a concept and turns it on it’s tail to create something that you would never think of. I think my favorite type of anime genre mix is the mixture of fantasy and sci-fi to create interesting worlds of action. I also like to mix sci-fi with idols because (spoiler warning for Macross Frontier movie 2) who doesn’t like a good battle song to pull at your emotions when the hero disappears right after confessing his love to the idol thus breaking the love triangle that was going on.

All in all the Genre is what creates the base of anime. You may think you like one thing and then find out that you don’t like it mixed with another topic. Also not all of the good anime have a good synopses so if the cover image looks good but the summary is bad…try it anyway you might be surprised at what you find and it might expand your genre interests.
